The Two Paths: Temporary and Permanent
Argentina offers two main residency statuses for foreigners: temporary residency (residencia temporaria), valid for up to 2 years and renewable, and permanent residency (residencia permanente), which has no expiration. Most applicants begin with temporary residency and transition to permanent after 2 years of legal residence. Citizens of Mercosur countries (Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, etc.) have access to an expedited path.
Residency Categories
The main categories for temporary residency include: rentista (proven passive income), pensionado (retirees with foreign pension), investor (capital investment in Argentina), work contract (employment by an Argentine company), and family reunification (spouse or parent of an Argentine citizen or resident). Each category has specific documentation requirements.
The Process
Applications are filed with the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones (DNM).
