How to Open a Bank Account in Argentina as a Foreigner

A practical guide to banking in Argentina as a foreign national — what you need, which banks to use and how the system works.

What You Need to Open an Account

Most Argentine banks require a DNI and proof of a fixed Argentine address to open a standard bank account. This means that full banking access requires completing the residency process first. Before obtaining a DNI, non-residents can open limited accounts with a passport and CDI, though options are more restricted.

Banking in Argentina: The Practical Reality

Argentine banking infrastructure has improved significantly but remains less sophisticated than European or US banking. Standard current accounts (cuenta corriente) and savings accounts are widely available. Debit cards work broadly. International wire transfers are possible but may encounter delays. For significant international transactions, working through a specialist financial operator or broker is often more efficient.

Digital Alternatives

Several financial technology platforms — including Brubank, Ualá and Naranja X — offer accounts that can be opened with a DNI and operated entirely from a mobile app. For expats who maintain their primary banking abroad and use Argentina only for local transactions, a combination of a local digital account and an international card (Wise, Revolut) is often the most practical solution.
