The difference between CUIL, CUIT and CDI in Argentina — what each is for and how to obtain them.

CDI — For Non-Residents
The CDI (Clave de Identificación) is the tax identification number for foreign nationals who have economic activity in Argentina but are not yet residents. It is issued by ARCA (formerly AFIP) and is required for property purchases, opening certain bank accounts, and other financial transactions. The CDI does not require residency and can be obtained with a passport.
CUIL — For Employees and Workers
The CUIL (Código Único de Identificación Laboral) is the social security identification number for individuals who work or have worked in Argentina — whether as employees or self-employed. Once you have a DNI, your CUIL is assigned automatically. It is required for employment contracts, payroll and social security contributions.
CUIT — For Businesses and Self-Employed
The CUIT (Código Único de Identificación Tributaria) is the tax ID for companies and self-employed professionals registered with ARCA. If you form a company in Argentina or operate as a monotributista, you will have a CUIT. It is used for all business tax filings, invoicing and ARCA compliance. Roffo handles CUIL and CUIT registration as part of every company formation and residency engagement.
