Healthcare in Buenos Aires: A Guide for Expats

Understanding Argentina's healthcare system — public vs. private, prepaga insurance, top hospitals and costs.

Public vs. Private Healthcare

Argentina has a three-tier healthcare system: the public system (free to all), the union-based obras sociales, and the private prepaga system. For expats and residents without Argentine employment, the private prepaga system is the standard choice. Argentine private healthcare is genuinely excellent — Buenos Aires has internationally accredited hospitals with highly trained physicians who frequently trained abroad.

Prepaga Insurance

Prepaga plans are private health insurance plans that provide access to a network of clinics, hospitals and specialists. Major providers include Swiss Medical, Medicus, Osde and Galeno. Monthly costs range from USD 80–300 depending on coverage level and age. For a family, a comprehensive plan with top-tier coverage runs USD 400–700/month — a fraction of comparable US health insurance premiums.

Top Hospitals

Buenos Aires' top private hospitals — Hospital Italiano, Hospital Alemán, Clínica Zabala and Sanatorio Otamendi — are equipped with the latest technology and staffed by specialists trained at Argentine and international institutions. Medical tourism to Buenos Aires for elective procedures is growing, particularly for dental work, ophthalmology and plastic surgery, where quality is high and costs are 60–80% below US prices.
