Argentine Spanish: Vos, Che and Lunfardo
Argentine Spanish has distinct features that set it apart from the Castilian or Mexican Spanish most foreigners learn. The most notable is the use of 'vos' instead of 'tú' (second person singular), with different verb conjugations. 'Che' is the universal term of address (made famous internationally by Che Guevara). Lunfardo, Buenos Aires' own slang with Italian, indigenous and immigrant roots, is woven into everyday speech. Embracing these differences accelerates integration.
How to Learn Before You Arrive
A solid B1 level (intermediate) Spanish before arrival makes the first months dramatically easier. Apps like Duolingo and Babbel provide a foundation; formal classes with a native Argentine teacher (widely available online) accelerate progress. Focusing on conversation rather than grammar from the beginning is the most effective approach for expats.
Immersion Once You Arrive
Buenos Aires is an excellent immersion environment — Argentines are patient and encouraging with Spanish learners. Language exchange meetups ('intercambios'), local conversation partners, and committing to a social life in Spanish accelerate acquisition. Spanish classes are affordable (USD 15–30/hour for private lessons with experienced teachers). Most expats reach functional conversational Spanish within 6–12 months of full immersion.
