The Rentista Visa: Living in Argentina on Passive Income

How the rentista residency category works for individuals with foreign passive income — investments, rental income and dividends.

May 28, 2026

Who Qualifies as a Rentista?

The rentista category is for individuals who receive recurring passive income from foreign sources — including rental income from overseas properties, dividends from investments, interest from financial assets, or other regular non-labor income. It is popular among financially independent individuals, digital investors and those living off investment portfolios.

Income Threshold and Documentation

You must demonstrate sufficient passive income to support yourself in Argentina. The threshold is modest relative to Western living standards — Argentina's cost of living means that USD 1,500–2,500 per month is typically more than sufficient. Documentation includes bank statements, investment account statements, property lease agreements or any official proof of recurring foreign income.

Rentista vs. Pensionado

The practical difference is the income source: pensionado applies to formal pension and retirement income; rentista applies to investment and rental income. If you have both, Roffo will advise which category presents the strongest application based on your documentation. Both ultimately lead to the same residency status and DNI.
