Argentina's Treaty Network
Argentina has double taxation treaties (convenios para evitar la doble imposición) with a number of countries including Germany, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Notably, the United States does not have a comprehensive tax treaty with Argentina.
What the Treaties Cover
Tax treaties typically address: which country has the right to tax specific income categories (dividends, interest, royalties, capital gains, employment income), what withholding rates apply to cross-border payments, and how double taxation is eliminated (through exemption or credit mechanisms). Treaty benefits are available only to residents of the signatory countries.
US Citizens: A Special Case
US citizens are taxed by the US on worldwide income regardless of residence. As Argentine tax residents, they also owe Argentine tax on worldwide income. The absence of a US-Argentina tax treaty means double taxation relief relies on the US foreign tax credit mechanism. US expats in Argentina should work with advisors experienced in both US and Argentine tax law — Roffo coordinates with US-qualified tax advisors for American clients.
