Temporary vs. Permanent Residency in Argentina: What's the Difference?

Understanding the distinction between temporary and permanent residency in Argentina and when to apply for each.

May 12, 2026

Temporary Residency

Temporary residency (residencia temporaria) is granted for 1–2 years depending on category and is renewable. It allows you to live and work in Argentina legally, open bank accounts, access public services, and apply for a DNI. After 2 consecutive years of temporary residency, you become eligible for permanent residency.

Permanent Residency

Permanent residency (residencia permanente) grants indefinite legal residence in Argentina with no renewal requirements. You can live, work, own property and access services on the same basis as Argentine citizens — without ever holding citizenship. Permanent residents may apply for Argentine citizenship after 2 years, but it is not required.

Which Should You Apply For?

If you are committing to life in Argentina long-term, begin with the category most suited to your profile (rentista, pensionado, investor, etc.) and plan the natural transition to permanent residency after 2 years. If you only need legal status for a specific project or a shorter period, temporary residency alone may be sufficient.
